Silk Noil

Fabric Description

Silk Noil (sometimes incorrectly called raw silk) has a nubby feel and a low sheen. Noil somewhat resembles cotton in surface texture, and sews easily. The nubby texture of noil comes from the use of very short fibers (called, appropriately, 'silk noils') to weave the fabric. When these short fibers are spun into yarns, the resulting yarns have occasional slubs and loose ends. Nubs vary between different weaves. Noil which has not been completely de-gummed (had the natural sericin removed), may easily attract dirt and odors. Wash before sewing up (see below).

General uses

Noil is a bit bulky to use for gathered construction, but it has a gentle drape. It is durable, travels well and resists wrinkles. It is best suited for loose to moderately fitted pants, skirts, slacks, dresses, and jackets. Also used for Men's suits. Silk noil is very easy to sew, doesn't show pin holes, but does tend to unravel.

Colors

Off-white, please call for others.

Care

Noil is very well suited for hand washing, and actually looks better after washing than dry cleaning. Click on the 'Fabric Care' buttons to the left for a link to detailed care instructions. Silk noil MAY shrink noticeably in hand washing (how much depends on the weave), and should be pre-shrunk before being cut. Pre-shrink by handwashing in lukewarm water and mild soap. DO NOT WRING: silk loses a considerable amount of strength when wet. Press damp fabric dry or drip dry. Silk noil may be machine dried, but this will increase shrinkage and should definitely be done before being cut and sewn. The most commonly asked question about noil is about removing the odor. The best way to remove this odor is to rinse the fabric in a baking soda/water solution after each wash. Dry Cleaning is NOT effective.

Pricing

Silk Noil is 44" wide and $9.95 per yard
