Organic Cottons

General

Yes, there is really such a thing as organic cotton. Organic cotton is 100% cotton which is grown in fields without pesticides or chemical fertilizers and harvested without defoliants. To be certified organic cotton, the cotton plants must have been grown in a field that has not been chemically fertilized or sprayed with pesticides for the past 3 years. As you can imagine, it costs a bit more as insect problems are treated by mechanical, not chemical means. Most of the organic cotton we buy is grown right here in the Texas panhandle, and we're pretty dang proud of this Texas-grown product.

It is a bit more expensive, but organic cotton may be very helpful for people with chemical sensitivities or allergies. Silk Road carries a wide variety of organic cotton in inventory.

Organic cotton comes in natural (light cream) color or a whitened stock (the bleaching agent is hydrogen peroxide, not chlorine). Natural corn starch is used for sizing, and this washes right out.

Organic Natural Brown color cottonNote that none of the colors of organic cotton we carry is dyed. Instead, the cotton plants are hybridized to be a natural light brown or a light green. Other colors of organic cotton are undoubtedly on the way. The picture at the left is natural brown organic cotton we grew right in our front yard on Lamar Blvd, in Austin, TX. Probably the smallest cotton patch in Texas, but the traffic keeps the Boll Weevils down pretty well. If you drive by our store, we would be grateful if you could throw your ice (no cups, thanks) on the cotton patch.

Organic cotton flannel and leno:

Flannel is that same familiar nightgown and pajama fabric we have seen since we were kids. Downy, soft and warm, it has a brushed surface with a plain weave. Our current organic cotton flannel is warm, and is used for shirts, baby blankets and lightweight jackets. Note: the organic cotton flannel carried by Silk Road is NOT treated with flame retardants and therefore may not be appropriate for children's sleepwear. You must decide the risk and benefits for yourself. Our organic cotton leno is a light natural color and is open weave.
Care: Machine wash and dry.
Colors: Natural White Organic Cotton Flannel. Organic Cotton Leno is not available
Price: Organic cotton flannel is 58" wide. $16.95 per yd.

Organic cotton chambray:

Organic cotton chambray is a soft, durable shirt fabric made with a plain weave of colored warp threads and white weft threads. It has a comfortable drape, and a weathered, rustic look. It is often sold alongside denims, and is used to make shirts, kid's clothes, Western wear, skirts and dresses. Easy to sew.
Care: Machine wash and dry.
Colors:Solid colors: Whitened.
Price: Organic cotton chambray: 60" wide: $14.95 per yd.

Organic cotton canvas:

We carry a light weight 100% organic cotton canvas. It is stiff, with a tight plain weave, and is undyed and untreated as well. Easy to sew, it is most often used for upholstery, slipcovers and tablecloths. Also used for outdoor furniture, awnings, umbrellas, beach bags, and the like. Be aware that cotton is not the best fabric for continuous outdoor duty: it is prone to mildew in damp climates and exposure to sunlight for just two weeks can reduce its strength by 50% or more. Bring it in when not needed.
Care: Machine wash and dry.
Price: Organic cotton canvas: 63" wide: $14.95 per yd.

Organic cotton sheeting:

We have located a sateen weave 100% organic fabric cotton material made especially for bed sheets and it is beautiful. It is 108 inches wide and is a natural ivory color, undyed and unbleached.
Care: Machine wash and dry.
Colors:Natural Ivory
Price: Organic cotton sheeting: 108" wide: $28.95 per yd.
