Freshwater Pearl Buttons
What the heck is a Freshwater Pearl?
It has been nearly a century since German immigrant J. R. Bopple put Muscatine,
Iowa on the map by transferring sea shell button manufacture techniques
to freshwater clams. Using treadle- powered machines, Bopple transformed
pigtoe, eggshell and pimpleback clams into beautiful iridescent, hand-dyed,
translucent buttons. Manufactured using solely hand labor, the advent of
Bakelite and plastic buttons spelled the end of handmade buttons.
It's amazing, but a sizeable quantity of these rare freshwater pearl
buttons was recently found stashed in a warehouse, and we have a very
good selection of them. And once this lot is sold, you will never see
antique, hand-dyed freshwater pearl buttons again.
The scanner doesn't really do these justice. They are iridescent, and
reflective. We have set a few on their sides so you can see the shanks.
All freshwater pearl buttons are 50 cents each. Call for sizes and availability
of specific colors.
